Which health plan is likely to cost you less per year? Estimate it before you pick.

Enter the numbers from your benefits guide. The spreadsheet adds yearly premiums and estimated out-of-pocket costs (capped at the out-of-pocket max), then subtracts employer HSA/HRA money, for three care-use scenarios you can edit. It is a cost comparison estimate only, not insurance, medical or tax advice, and it cannot promise any saving.

What's included (open-enrollment-health-plan-comparison.zip: open-enrollment-health-plan-comparison.xlsx + start-here-health-plan-comparison.pdf)

• Plans (up to 4): Individual/Family tier, plan year start, premium per paycheck with a pay-frequency dropdown (weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly), individual and family deductible and out-of-pocket max, coinsurance, copays (primary care, specialist, urgent care, ER, generic and brand Rx), and employer HSA/HRA contribution. Yearly premium is calculated.

• Scenarios: editable Low, Typical and High care use: visits by type, Rx fills, and procedures/tests/hospital cost

• Dashboard: estimated yearly cost per plan for each scenario, with the cheapest plan in green, the difference vs. the next best, fixed cost (premiums minus HSA money), worst case (fixed cost plus out-of-pocket max), a break-even note and a chart

• Calc: every step of the estimate shown

• Two Employers: compare coverage at two jobs, including dental + vision premiums and notes, with a total at typical use and the difference

• HSA FSA Year-End (new, free update): days left in your plan year, how much FSA money is at risk after any carryover or grace period, a planned-purchases list and a checklist of common eligible expenses. HSA balances roll over.

• Instructions tab + 1-page Start Here PDF. Fictional DEMO values (yellow) show how it works.

How it works

1. Open the .xlsx in Excel or save it as a Google Sheet.

2. Pick Individual or Family and enter each plan from your benefits guide.

3. Adjust the Low, Typical and High scenarios to your expected care.

4. Compare yearly cost, fixed cost and worst case on the Dashboard.

Compatibility: Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel. In Google Sheets, upload the .xlsx to Drive, then choose File > Save as Google Sheets. No macros, scripts or add-ons. Your copy stays private to you.

Who it's for: employees choosing a plan during open enrollment, anyone weighing a PPO vs. an HDHP with HSA, and job seekers comparing benefits at two employers.

FAQ

• When is open enrollment? (dates checked Oct 28, 2026) Most employer windows run about 2 weeks in October or November. HealthCare.gov opens Nov 1, 2026: pick a plan by Dec 15 for Jan 1 coverage, and open enrollment ends Jan 15, 2027. State exchanges and employers set their own dates, so check with your employer or your state exchange. This is a comparison worksheet, not advice.

• Does it tell me which plan to choose? No. It estimates costs from the numbers you enter. Check network, doctors and coverage details with your plan documents or HR.

• Is it insurance, medical or tax advice? No. It is a cost comparison estimate only and assumes in-network care.

• Is it a subscription? No. You pay once.
