Chronicles of a Kingfisher

by N.H. Kernani

Format: EPUB | Illustrated

Chronicles of a Kingfisher follows Robin, a twenty-year-old artist navigating post-adolescence in 1969 America. Estranged from her past and trapped in her present, she works for Knox, a respected artist in Brooklyn, for whom she harbors unrequited feelings. Her life takes a sharp turn with the arrival of Erik Larsen, a private investigator looking into a forged painting she and Knox are entangled with.

In her attempts to escape, Robin must confront her own internal contradictions: her desire for connection, her resistance to conformity, and her neurodivergent view of the world. She moves through different states, drifting through the hidden layers of the art and crime worlds.

Blending visual art with literary prose, Kingfisher is a coming-of-age story about the estrangement that defines growing up and the pursuit of selfhood. Through themes of isolation, betrayal, and self-discovery, it asks: What does it mean to lose everything you thought you were to become who you are?
