According to an Irish legend, the first human was born of an alder tree. This short story was written in County Cork in November 2019, as the Amazon rainforest burned. It was commissioned for the Whose Trees These Are: Festival of Trees, hosted by the Dock Arts Centre in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.
