When we moved into our house 20 years ago, we decided to make the flower bed by the front door a pop of color. Over the years, we've added new colors and textures so it always looks different. I dubbed the space the "Whitman garden" because it reminded me of a Whitman's candy sampler box.

Using basic lace stitches, the generously sized asymmetrical shawl is perfect for cool summer nights and breezy fall days.

Materials Needed:

-Fingering weight yarn

-Yarn used in sample: Alwan Sultan Fiber, 2 skeins in Spring Kit
MC: Seagrass
CC: Spring Confetti 2.0
-Total amount of yarn used: 639 yds/584 m (MC: 277 yds/254 m; CC: 362 yds/330 m)

I suggest using a yarn with some wool to help the stitches block well; be sure to look up specific blocking techniques for acrylic yarn if you choose to use it. Stick with solid, semisolid or tonal colorways to help the lace pattern be clear.

-US 6 40” circular needle or size to obtain gauge
-Darning needle
-Spare yarn for lifelines (optional) Locking stitch markers (optional)

Shawl size (blocked):

-Gauge: 22 sts and 16 rows = 4"/10 cm in GARTER STRIPES, blocked (NOTE: measurement is back & forth = 1 stripe)

-93.5"/237.5 cm, cast on to bind off edge
-33.5"/85.09 cm, edge to bind off

Skill level: adventurous beginner-intermediate. Pattern is written and includes stitch definitions and a video link to the bind off used
