#112: The First Frost | A Krampus Midwinter Mystery: A 5e One-Shot for Small Groups
The village has kept its midwinter vigil for a thousand years. This year the children are vanishing, one a night, and the old shrine on the ridge is warm again.
The First Frost is a Krampus one-shot for fifth edition, a melancholy midwinter mystery built to run in a single evening with zero prep. The mountain village keeps its oldest festival while its children disappear into the dark, and the frightened townsfolk blame the abandoned shrine of the guardian their own ancestors once betrayed and cursed. Your table climbs from the snowbound square into a frozen sanctum to learn what the betrayal made, and whether it can still be saved.
In the ice the party finds the Emberbrand Coal, a light that never cools and shows the naughty-or-nice truth of anyone near it, and behind it, the thing the curse has been keeping. This is not a monster hunt with an easy villain. It is an investigation that ends at a wronged protector, and the night hands the players a real choice: destroy what the curse has made, bind its memory in the ice, or break the curse and set the guardian free. Three endings, no wrong answer, and the same warm black-iron chain-link earned on every one, pressed into a hero's hand with a warning: when the bells toll thrice, do not let him wear the crown.
What makes it land is the sorrow under the snow. The guardian was the village's own, turned monstrous by the people it once kept safe, and your players will fight it and grieve it in the same breath.
Part of Krampus: A Yuletide Quartet. The First Frost is Book One of four standalone midwinter one-shots that tell one larger story across four winters: Book One, The First Frost; Book Two, The Naughty List; Book Three, The Silence Yet to Come; and Book Four, The Gnashing Court. Each stands completely on its own and plays in any order, so you never need the others to run this night. A warm chain-link passes from book to book, and a table that plays all four watches a single old debt come due.
