Cactus Art Lesson Summer Art Project Summer Cactus in a Pot Art Activity
This Cactus in a Pot Art Lesson is a bright summer art project that combines drawing, oil pastel techniques and watercolor resist painting. Students draw a potted cactus with flowers, patterns and texture, then bring it to life with oil pastel and watercolor for a colorful, boho-inspired artwork.
Guided drawing steps build confidence, and students personalize their work with their own patterns, colors and design choices. Watching the resist technique reveal bold lines and textures when they paint over the oil pastel is a classroom favorite. The finished pieces look great on bulletin boards and make a lovely gift.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN
Students draw a cactus in a pot, add a second cactus and flower details, build texture with lines and spines, and decorate the pot with geometric patterns such as triangles. They finish with oil pastel and watercolor for bold contrast and vibrant color. Along the way they practice oil pastel and resist painting, watercolor painting and color layering, drawing plants with form and structure, and pattern and texture, and explore the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, space, texture, form and value.
You will need a pencil and eraser, a black felt marker, oil pastels, watercolor paints or paint cakes, a paintbrush and water, and cardstock or watercolor paper. Project the step-by-step instructions, demonstrate the techniques live and give printed guides to independent learners. Each step has clear visuals and written directions.
