This Autumn Line Leaf Art Lesson is a free fall art project where students explore line and mixed media. The finished piece uses both paint and oil pastel, so students get to try layering paper, pastel and a paint resist technique.

It is made for teachers and homeschool families who want a complete autumn lesson they can teach with confidence. Every step is shown with a picture and a short text description, each on its own page, so students can follow along and create the piece successfully.

WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING

★★★★ “The students were very engaged in this. Due to COVID rules I did 2 groups of kids, one group made the spirals first and the other made the leaves first. It worked out really well. The final products were used as a term 1 assessment piece. The expectations were easy to understand and follow.” Daily L.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • Lesson plan with the materials list
  • Visual and text step-by-step, one step per page
  • Step-by-step drawing handout for students

  • Finished example (poster sample)

Materials: pencil, eraser, black felt, step-by-step drawing handouts (one per student), orange paint, card stock or watercolor paper, pastel, paint brush and water.

HOW TO USE IT

Read the lesson plan first and gather your materials in advance so the lesson runs smoothly. Photocopy the student handouts, such as the step-by-step drawing page and the rubric. You may want to make a sample yourself so you are ready to help students later.

Print the poster sample in color to show students what they are making before you start. Then project the step-by-step pages, show them under a document camera, or use them as your own guide while you demonstrate the lesson.
