What’s the right thing to say when a student tells me they have cancer?

When a student quietly tells you they’ve been diagnosed with cancer, it can stop you in your tracks.

You already know that first conversation you have when someone discloses their diagnosis is crucial in building or maintaining a relationship of trust and comfort for your student. It’s a tender time. So want to respond with kindness, confidence and professionalism but you may also feel unsure what to say, what not to say, and how to support them safely without overstepping your role.

This 1-hour masterclass will give you the clarity, language and confidence to handle these conversations with compassion, calm and appropriate boundaries. It will ensure that your student feels seen, respected and supported, and that you feel grounded in your role as a teacher.

Whether this is your first time having this conversation, or you’ve already supported students through illness and want to refine your approach, this session will help you feel more prepared and less anxious about what might arise.

In this masterclass, you’ll learn how to:

✔ Use supportive, appropriate language

Understand what tends to feel helpful for someone living with cancer and which well-meaning phrases can unintentionally cause harm or discomfort.

✔ Know what to say, and what to avoid

Learn how to respond in a way that is compassionate, respectful and grounded, without offering medical advice or trying to “fix” the situation.

✔ Ask the right questions with confidence

Discover how to gently explore what your student needs, how their treatment may be affecting them, and what feels safe and supportive for their practice.

✔ Assess needs and adapt appropriately

Gain clarity around what information is useful to gather, how to assess capacity and limitations, and how to work safely within your scope of practice.

✔ Hold clear, compassionate boundaries

Learn how to remain supportive without becoming emotionally over-responsible, crossing professional lines, or carrying the student’s experience as your own.

✔ Signpost responsibly

Understand when and how to refer or signpost to other professionals, services or support systems — so your student gets the wider support they may need.

✔ Protect your own wellbeing as a teacher

Explore simple self-care and reflection practices to help you process emotional conversations, avoid burnout, and continue teaching with resilience and integrity.

This masterclass is for you if:
