This interactive counseling activity helps clients in substance use recovery and relapse prevention groups learn about ego defense mechanisms in an engaging, discussion-based way. Instead of simply reading definitions, clients work together to identify how defense mechanisms show up in real-life recovery situations.

Many of the included scenarios reflect experiences common in addiction and recovery, helping clients recognize how certain thinking patterns can protect us emotionally while sometimes interfering with healing and relapse prevention.

Through group discussion, clients often have powerful “that’s me” moments that increase insight and awareness.

What’s Included

• 16 Ego Defense Mechanism Cards

• 16 Scenario Cards with realistic recovery-related examples

• Client Reflection Worksheet where clients identify which defense mechanisms they personally use and explore why

How the Activity Works

  1. The counselor tapes the ego defense mechanism cards on a board or wall around the room.
  2. Clients take turns reading the scenario cards aloud.
  3. As a group, clients discuss which defense mechanism the scenario represents and match it to the correct card.
  4. Once all scenarios are matched, the group reviews each defense mechanism and discusses how these patterns may show up in recovery and relapse prevention.
  5. Clients complete the reflection worksheet, identifying which defense mechanisms they personally relate to and why those defenses may have developed.
