Downtown Burnsville features Downtown Cowl and Burnsville Shawl. My favorite LYS is along the way to the dentist, so we always leave a bit early and stop by to see Wendy at Yummi Yarns. An old-fashioned building with brick walls and worn hardwood floors is enlivened with brilliantly colored yarn, hand made ar pieces, and local mountain crafts. Knitting or crocheting at the social center is Wendy, the owner of Yummi Yarns. The last time I was in, a rare find of cotton and linen caught my eye among all the gorgeously dyed wool. In honor of my friend, Wendy, and as a farewell to my favorite NC LYS, I designed Downtown Cowl and Burnsville Shawl with 3 skeins from her shop paired with her favorite cable pattern, Air Bender (without the drops), from my shop.

Downtown Cowl allows the self-striping yarn to unintentionally pool across gentle cables. The easy (not beginner) level pattern is offered in two sizes for a snug turtleneck fit or a looser fashionable styel.

Burnsville Shawl turns the self-striping yarn every which way to create a myriad of shading and shapes in an intermediate level design. Worked in pieces, two garter sections create the wings. The center panel matches the Downtown Cowl cables. Keeping the stitches live, more stitches are picked up along each wing to create a seamless cabled edge. This extra-long cowl allows for tying up or using a shawl pin. Tie it in back or wear it like a cowl and tie it in front.

Special Notes:

  • Edge It: on Burnsville Shawl, the applied I-cord is worked in such a way as to hide the top edge inside the I-cord. If this feels awkward, you can work a standard I-cord edging (without leaving 1 st on the right needle before picking up), but the top edge will be visible through the I-cord.
  • Watch It: check out the Knit Eco Chic Quick Stitch Tutorials blog for a video on the applied I-cord top edge.
  • Yarn It: the recommended 3 skeins is sufficient for both the cowl and the shawl. If knitting the cowl only, 1 skein is required. If knitting the shawl only, 3 skeins are required.
