Brussels can claim to be the art nouveau capital of Europe. Its astonishing collection of art nouveau houses and buildings designed by architects like Victor Horta, Henry van der Velde and Paul Hankar around the turn of the twentieth century attracts thousands of visitors each year. Surprisingly there is no comprehensive English language guide to this remarkable architectural and design heritage.
Brussels Art Nouveau: Architecture and Design fills the gap. Organised around eleven carefully-designed areas, each with its own map showing clearly the location of buildings, this new book surveys no less than [xxx] buildings of genuine architectural merit. The key features of each building is clearly described and the text includes pen portraits of the most important architects. Brussels Art Nouveau is lavishly illustrated throughout with 230 specially-commissioned full colour photographs including many rarely-seen interiors.
Brussels Art Nouveau will appeal to amateur and professional enthusiasts for this most attractive and eclectic architectural style. Both as a book of reference and a guide for those wishing to devise their own tours and visits, this new book will be a valuable addition to professional, institutional or personal collections.

I used this book to identify houses I wished to visit following the Banad (Brussels Art Nouveau Art Deco) Festival in March. The maps proved really useful partly because they showed clusters of properties and partly to physically locate them. Be prepared for a lot of walking. I look forward to seeing a follow up book on Art Deco properties. It would have been helpful to have an index of the properties at the back of the book. It is possible to enter and view the interiors of a few of the properties by prior arrangement (explore Brussels website)

Just what I wanted. Good photos of interiors and informative regarding architects and other historical aspects. Also a great guide to all Art Nouveau buildings in Brussels which I will base my next trip around.

A first-rate review of the beautiful architecture of a Brussels inner city suburb. If you love Brussels and/or architecture, don't miss it.

A great book. Just the right amount of information, good photos, good maps. Thoroughly recommended.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 November 2016I really enjoyed this wonderful new book. I'm a real enthusiast for Art Nouveau and I've been to Brussels to look at the buildings there. I've never found a good guide but this book should really fill the gap. There are maps of the different areas of Brussels which show where all the buildings are situated and they are grouped in such a way that one might be able to walk around them easily. Although I knew about the art nouveau buildings in Brussels I had no idea there were so many. The book cover well over three hundred! The photographs are superb and most of the buildings are illustrated, including many interiors. I'm looking forward to going to Brussels again and I'll definitely take this book with me.

A guidebook to Brussels Art Nouveau

For those (like me) that can't travel to Brussels, this book is a rich repertory of the best Art Nouveau architecture.
For those that CAN, with the book on hands, it is a valuable guide, street by street, house by house, of the best exemples of that architecture. This is its best function: to serve as a traveling guide to those beautiful houses. The accompanying maps (eleven in total) help us to stroll through Brussels and pinpoint more than three hundred of those houses (half of them photographed in the book). What else can I say?

This is a beautiful, informative, and useful book. The research, writing and photography are all excellent. We used it on a recent trip to Brussels, to tour Art Nouveau structures - the many maps work very well for finding buildings, and the in-depth information is great. This goes way beyond most architectural guide books. Highly recommended.
