Summer, 1962. The Starlite Drive-In is ten years old, and its owner has just agreed to sell it to a smooth-talking man from Dayton. Then the notes start. Every Friday night, cards printed in green ink turn up under the windshield wipers of a whole row of cars, written in a secret code. Retired schoolteacher Dot Pruitt decodes the first one by the light of the movie screen. It says: The sale is not what it seems.

Read a short chapter, then solve the puzzles that go with it. Many of the secret messages are the notes themselves.

WHAT YOU GET

One PDF, 110 pages, made for US Letter paper (8.5 x 11 in), ready to print at home:

  • 25 short chapters of a gentle, old-fashioned mystery
  • 13 secret messages (cryptograms) to decode, with hints
  • 25 word searches, each with a hidden clue
  • 12 word scrambles with bonus words
  • 6 big mazes, each a scene from the story
  • A guessing page partway through
  • Every answer at the back
  • Page 2 is a one-page "How to print this book"

LARGE PRINT, TRULY

Story text is 20-point type; puzzle letters are bold 22 to 24 point. Big pages, wide margins, plenty of room for a pencil.

CHECKED TWICE

Every puzzle was solved a second time by a separate program before release, so each code has one answer, each scramble has one answer, and each word search word appears exactly once.

Book 2 of the Millbrook Mysteries. It stands on its own; you do not need Book 1 first.

THE MATH

56 story-linked puzzles for $4.99 is about 9 cents a puzzle, next to about 3 cents a grid for a plain word-search pack, plus a 25-chapter mystery you cannot print for free anywhere.

KEEP IT TIDY

Print it once and slip the pages into a 3-ring binder or a report cover, so the book sits on the kitchen table like a book, not 110 loose sheets.

This is a digital download. No book will be mailed. The file arrives the moment payment goes through.

PRINT TIPS

Print single-sided at 100% / "Actual size" (or "Fit to page" if your printer trims the edge). Black ink only. Plain copy paper works; 24 lb paper and a binder make a keeper. Print as many copies as you like for your own household; please don't share the file.

ABOUT THE MAKER

Made by hand on graph paper by a small studio, then drawn in code and checked twice. Oak Lane Puzzle Press is an Isaac Oppenheimer Studio imprint.
