Makassar Strait for quintet - Score and Parts PDF
Makassar Strait was written for Transit, a New York-based new music ensemble. Makassar Strait is a body of water which connects the island of Mindanao, Philippines with the Indonesian Island of Java. Three of the four movements make use of Filipino kulintang (gong percussion) melodies woven into the fabric of the music. The third movement represents an excursion to Java via Makassar Strait. Hints of Javanese Gamelan color the tone of this movement. The final movement plays with Escher-inspired musical textures and counterpoint.
