Northern Pintail - The Complete Huntervale Hunting Guide (PDF)

The greyhound of the air - elegant, wary, and one of the best ducks on the table when you fool one.

Pintails also come wrapped in a conservation story that every hunter should understand. Their numbers have declined over the long term, largely because of changes to the prairie wetlands where they nest. As a result, managers often set conservative limits on the species, and pintail seasons sometimes differ from the general duck season. This guide covers how to identify, scout, set up for, and cleanly take pintails - and how to hunt them in a way that respects the bird and the rules that protect it. One thing is non-negotiable and stated up front: hunting waterfowl requires **non-toxic shot by federal law.** Lead shot is illegal for ducks. We will come back to that.
