This Spring Value Grid Drawing resource gives grades 5 to 8 students structured, skill-building drawing practice using real spring photographs taken by Kathleen McGiveron (Ms Artastic). Students copy a black and white photograph square by square into the blank grid beside it, paying close attention to detail, light, dark and gradual shading changes.

It builds observation, proportion, value, shading, realism and fine motor control in a calm, focused way. Breaking a complicated image into manageable squares also teaches patience and visual analysis, which makes it a good fit for middle school art, upper elementary art and homeschool learners ready for more intentional observational drawing.

HOW TO USE IT

Use it for value and shading lessons, grid drawing units, spring art lessons, drawing centers, early finishers, sub plans, independent practice and homeschool art. You can also use it as a skill-building booklet across a longer unit so students steadily improve their observation and realism.

Because students work from photographs and focus on value, they go beyond outlining shapes. They learn to see tonal changes, develop form through shading and study the natural textures of flowers, ducks, seedlings and blossoms.
