Cluny plays on the botanical name for heather – Calluna – and also a little bit of Scottish folklore: Ewen, or ‘Cluny’ Macpherson was Chief of Clan Macpherson and a Jacobite officer during the Rising in Scotland over 1745-46, which sought to put Prince Charles Edward Stuart on the throne. To be fair, his politics were ambivalent… Having married Jean, the eldest daughter of famous Jacobite Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat in 1742, he took command of a government regiment in early 1745 but was then kidnapped by his cousins, imprisoned and ‘encouraged’ to accept a commission in the Jacobite forces. Nevertheless, he was mentioned in records for his bravery at battles in Penrith and Falkirk and was stationed at Ruthven near Inverness when news came of the disastrous campaign at Culloden. Jacobite legend has it that Cluny escaped capture by government forces following Culloden by sleeping in the heather of the highland hills, his white linen sark (long shirt) camouflaged by the flowers growing so prolifically around him. This story contributes to the folklore of white heather as having lucky and protective qualities.
