I believe it is imperative that young people learn the importance of building their facility as musicians. Without developing one’s tone quality, technical facility, ensemble skills, etc. one does not have the ability to produce music of quality because they don’t possess the ability to do so.
Many of us have been to an “open mic” in which people without much facility on their instrument play original music for a crowd of (hopefully) supportive friends. When people focus on the “art” of music without developing their “craft,” what results is a lot of terrible original music.
However, I think one could also make an argument that in our traditional music education, the average student will never get an opportunity to compose, improvise, choose the music they learn, or put together their own arrangements.
I believe that a guitar class in school (or private guitar instruction) can be a great opportunity to provide students with something they are not getting in their ensemble classes. This includes self-guided learning, arranging, composing, improvising and more! This book is to assist you in doing just that, whether teaching a guitar class, teaching privately, or learning on your own.
The concepts and ideas presented in this book are designed to eliminate all the superfluous information that typically stands as a long and arduous trudge between a beginning guitar student and music making!
