My mom grew up on a farm in Ireland and moved to the U.S. as a teenager. Arboe Shawl is named for a lakeside town near her childhood home. This crescent shawl begins with a field of smooth stockinette. As you approach the border, purl ridges break up the landscape like the stone walls that divide up the Irish countryside. Between ridges, large eyelets emerge as a tribute to Ireland’s thousands of lakes. The shawl is finished with a dainty picot bind-off to add a bit of femininity.

This shawl begins with a garter tab and grows quickly with easy shaping. This project is great for social knitting since only the eyelet rows and bind-off call for a touch more attention than the rest. Worked in a solid or tonal fingering weight yarn at a large gauge, the resulting shawl has beautiful drape and airiness. Whether you’re strolling down a city sidewalk or a breezy Irish shore, Arboe Shawl will flutter along with classic style.
