When life is a whirlwind, create a little bit of calm for yourself. Textured stitches swirl around the Whirlwind Beanie and then come together in a perfectly neat resolution. The pattern is easy to memorize, but takes just enough focus to provide an excellent distraction.

The Whirlwind Beanie includes a full range of sizes, from Preemie to Adult M, and includes options for adjusting to size. It uses a modified fpdc to create a warmer fabric with no gaps and has instructions for both a regular beanie and a messy bun hat. Though the pattern is fairly straightforward, it uses advanced techniques that rely on the crocheter being able to read their work.

Sample

Sample used Oink Pigments Mystic, 230yds/100g in Smoky Purl to create a size Adult S
Thanks to Oink Pigments for providing the yarn for the pattern sample!

Gauge

16 sts and 16 rows = 4”/10cm in hdc. Be sure to check gauge! Gauge swatch is worked in the round and measurements are taken after blocking. Do not stretch the fabric when checking gauge. If you don’t want to get gauge, follow the adjustment notes throughout the pattern to work the beanie to size. Differences in gauge will change the finished size and will also impact the yardage required.

Yarn and Other Materials

The pattern calls for a DK weight yarn but can be adjusted to work with any weight - it works up perfectly in anything from a fingering weight to a bulky.

I recommend a colorway without too much variegation as the texture will get lost in the color changes.

Optional notions include stitch markers, an elastic for the messy bun version, and a pom if desired.

Printing

Both a regular and printer friendly version are available! The regular version includes large photos on the first page and the last two pages, so print accordingly. The printer-friendly version has only one photo on the cover page, and less spacing so the pattern takes up fewer pages. For more details on what the printer-friendly version includes, see this page. If you are working from the printer-friendly version and are having trouble with a pattern, I strongly recommend checking the regular version. The text will be easier to read and it might have more detailed instructions.

Screen Reader Compatibility

The main pattern pdf is designed to be screen reader compatible. The text is all in one column and headers are formatted according to the style sheet. The pattern is written out completely and the images have descriptive alt text. Size information is provided in a table, but is also listed in text form. Please note that the pattern has multiple sizes. When relevant, instructions for larger sizes are given in parentheses. For example, dc 5 (10, 15) 20, 25 (30, 35). However, the beanie can be worked to size so you can ignore the exact stitch numbers if desired.
