Smokin' Joe Cotton, The Blues'll Never be the Same
SMOKIN’ JOE COTTON, THE BLUES'LL NEVER BE THE SAME
Smokin’ Joe Cotton is the album version of Episode 004 of The Rock and Roll Rewind Project.
“I was born in 1929 in Independence Louisiana. My mama named me Joseph Herbert Hoover Cotton, but everyone knew me as plain Joe. When I was five, we joined the Great Migration North to Chicago. For three days we walked or took the Panama Limited, we were only allowed to ride in the Jim Crow cars. We arrived at the Black Belt in Bronzeville in December. I remember. It was so cold.”
What happens when a journey home becomes a journey through a lifetime?
Across seven original tracks, Smokin’ Joe Cotton follows Joe from his early childhood in Independence, Louisiana, to Bronzeville, Chicago, and eventually back south on Highway 55 in search of his roots.
Growing up in Chicago, Joe discovers the blues harp and learns from the bluesmen around Maxwell Street and the South Side clubs. Following the death of his mother, twenty-six-year-old Joe heads south, and the road begins to unlock memories of childhood, gospel, the blues, faith and a mysterious encounter with Papa Legba.
Musically, the album travels through gospel, Delta and Chicago blues, using original songs and storytelling to explore migration, memory, spirituality and the musical traditions that helped shape modern popular music.
The journey closes decades later with Joe, now around eighty, looking back across his life before Papa Legba Blues returns in a final, mysterious reprise — leaving the listener to decide whether Joe’s last encounter with the gatekeeper is memory, dream, vision or something more.
Smokin’ Joe Cotton is a work of historical musical fiction. Its characters and narrative are fictional, set against real periods of migration, segregation and musical change. The album draws inspiration from African American blues and gospel traditions and encounters spiritual beliefs and traditions beyond Joe’s own musical journey. The Rock and Roll Rewind Project does not attempt to speak for those lived experiences. Through original music and storytelling, the project seeks to acknowledge, celebrate and explore the people, creativity and cultural influences behind the music.
