This reel is one of 5 tunes I wrote years ago for a recording of some of the Beatrix Potter tales narrated in Gaelic - each main character from the five tales got their own tune. This one is Benjamin Bunny's. There's also one for Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck, Mr Jeremy Fisher, and Squirrel Nutkin so you never know they might appear too at some time!

It's a reel, but doesn't need to be very fast, just steady and rhythmic. There are 3 teaching videos:

  • one going over the tune and fingering phrase by phrase.
  • one with for the left hand - which is all left hand thumb, discussing where on the string gives you the sound you want - that'll change all the time depending on the effect you want to achieve.
  • playing the tune with two hands. This is a great exercise in coordination even if you can play the tune all in one hand.

Both versions are on the sheet music. For the two handed version notes with the stems up are played with the right hand and those with the stems down are played with the left hand.

You can see the tune being played in the YouTube video in the image gallery as well as a sample of the score.

Key of G (no F or C strings are used so it can be a useful tune in sets without having to change levers),

No lever changes

2/2 or cut common time (reel)

Fingering given

Involves repeated notes, some cuts and 32 'dirrums', some tune notes are tied over the bar. The left hand uses the thumb, or octaves. Or the tune can be split between two hands.
