From Psychedelics to Cybernetics

The development of the mind is more than just the evolution of the brain. Each step of the evolutionary ladder is paralleled by steps on the neurological ladder from infant to adult and beyond, each opening a new neurological circuit. As we create new steps for ourselves we become the directors of our evolution, and as we begin to author our own input we can develop an owner’s manual for the mind.

Dr. Leary’s workshop places factors from television to psychedelic drugs to video games to virtual reality computer systems in perspective on the continuing exploration of the inner frontier. Dr. Timothy Leary, one of the most revolutionary thinkers of all time, began his work with psychotherapy and mind expansion at Harvard University in 1959. His successful therapeutic experiments with psychedelics ended with their illegalization in 1966, and Dr. Leary’s work became centered on new scientific means of extending life and increasing intelligence. Psychology author and novelist, he created computer software and was a major proponent of virtual reality systems long before they were technologically feasible.
