See your debt-free date. Type in your debts once and this Excel planner compares three ways of paying: minimum payments only, the snowball method (smallest balance first) and the avalanche method (highest interest rate first).

WHAT YOU GET

  • Debt-Payoff-Planner_Blank.xlsx: ready for your own debts
  • Debt-Payoff-Planner_Example.xlsx: filled in with five sample debts so you can see how it works
  • Instant download, Excel (.xlsx) format, no macros

WHAT YOU SEE

  • Debt-free date, number of months, total interest and total paid for each method, side by side
  • Interest saved compared with paying only the minimums
  • The payoff order, with the month and date each debt is cleared
  • Charts of your total debt falling month by month and total interest paid
  • Up to 10 debts, an extra monthly payment and an optional one-off lump sum

IN THE SAMPLE

$28,070 across five debts, with an extra $200 a month: 35 months instead of 73 on minimums only, saving over $4,000 in interest. Your numbers will differ.

HOW IT IS CALCULATED

Interest is worked out each month as balance x APR / 12, added before the payment, and rounded to the cent. A Check sheet compares the workings with the standard loan formulas, and the planner was tested against an independent model in 15 scenarios. Actual lender statements can differ slightly (daily interest, fees, rate changes). Student loans (HECS-HELP) are indexed rather than charged interest, so are not included.

COMPATIBILITY

Built in Excel format (.xlsx) and checked by recalculating in LibreOffice. It uses standard formulas only. It can be imported into Google Sheets via Google Drive, but please use Excel or LibreOffice if you want to be sure everything (including charts) looks as pictured.
