Trauma Bond is a powerful and unhealthy emotional attachment that develops between an abused person and their abuser, driven by repeating cycles of mistreatment and intermittent affection.

What is a Trauma Bond ?

Definition: An intense emotional tie to someone who causes harm, manipulation, or distress.

The Cycle: It relies on intermittent reinforcement—unpredictable shifts between abuse and sudden kindness or relief.

Common Misconception: People on social media often use "trauma bonding" to mean connecting over shared hardships, but clinically it refers specifically to an abusive dynamic.

Stages of Trauma Bonding

Love Bombing: The relationship starts with overwhelming affection, praise, and attention.

Gaining Trust: The abuser establishes dependency by rushing milestones or offering support.

Criticism: Affection shifts toward subtle or overt control and criticism.

Manipulation: Gaslighting and mind games make the victim doubt their own reality.

Resignation: The victim adapts their behavior to avoid conflict and "walks on eggshells".

Distress: Anxiety, low self-esteem, and social isolation set in.

Repetition: The cycle repeats, deepening the emotional addiction to the highs and lows.

Signs of a Trauma Bond

Walking on Eggshells: Constantly monitoring your behavior to keep the other person calm.

Making Excuses: Defending or rationalizing the abuser's harmful actions to friends and family.

Inability to Leave: Feeling stuck or repeatedly returning to the relationship despite deep unhappiness.

Loss of Self: Abandoning your own needs, hobbies, and boundaries to satisfy the abuser

How to Heal

Document the Reality: Write down interactions and facts to break through cognitive dissonance and denial.

Seek Support: Reach out to trusted friends, family, or the

National Domestic Violence Hotline for an outside perspective.

Set Boundaries: Rebuild your self-worth and practice saying no without guilt.

Professional Therapy: Work with a trauma-informed therapist to process the nervous system's response to the abuse.
