We’ve all seen the elves on the shelves, Santa’s workshop elves, and the beautiful elves of Tolkien. But what were elves originally? And what relevance do they have to modern witches and practitioners of seiðr? More importantly, how can we come into relationship with elves and stay (relatively) safe while doing so?

Join me for an introductory look at elves from a witch's perspective. In this class, I begin by attempting to answer that all-important question, “What is an elf?” Here, I cover the earliest accounts of elves in the OE and ON sources, the possible elven traits they reveal, and some of the ways in which those traits have changed throughout the centuries. Then I trace the long thread of partnership between elves and witches throughout the ages, connecting those earlier Iron Age sources with their parallels in the Early Modern English and Scottish witchcraft accounts. Finally, I talk about the nuances of coming into relationship with elves, the various kinds of relationship that can exist with them, offerings, troubleshooting, and elves as teachers and partners-in-magic.
