Welcome to Kuwento't Salita
Stories and Words: An English–Tagalog Dictionary for Young Learners
Every language holds a treasure chest of stories. In the Philippines, many of those treasures are the alamat and pabula: the legends and fables that grandparents have told children for generations. They explain how the pineapple got its many eyes, why the mountains stand where they do, and what happens when we forget to be kind, honest, or grateful.
Kuwento't Salita opens that treasure chest for a new generation of learners. Instead of long lists of words to memorise, each Tagalog word is introduced through a story, so children meet new vocabulary the way they learn best: through imagination, characters, and meaning.
Who is this book for?
Kuwento't Salita is written for children aged 5 to 10, and for the grown-ups who learn alongside them:
- Filipino families living abroad who want their children to stay connected to their heritage, understand their lola and lolo, and feel proud of where they come from
- Children of mixed heritage discovering the Filipino side of their story
- Non-Filipino children and families curious about a new language and culture
- Parents, teachers, and homeschoolers looking for a gentle, story-based resource for language lessons or bedtime reading
No prior knowledge of Tagalog is needed. Every word is paired with its English meaning, so child and parent can explore together, even if neither speaks Tagalog yet.
How will your child benefit?
- Words that stick. When a word is tied to a story, children remember it. They recall pinya because they remember the girl who couldn't find anything.
- Culture, not just vocabulary. Your child will learn about Filipino values like paggalang (respect), kasipagan (hard work), and pagmamahal sa pamilya (love for family) through the lessons each legend carries.
- Confidence in two languages. Seeing English and Tagalog side by side helps children build bilingual skills naturally, without pressure.
- Reading time that means something. Each story makes a perfect bedtime read or classroom activity, sparking conversations about right and wrong, kindness, and consequences.
- A bridge between generations. This book gives children the words to share stories with Filipino grandparents and relatives, and gives parents a way to pass on the tales they grew up with.
Language is more than words. It is belonging. My hope is that every child who opens this book finds a little piece of the Philippines to carry with them, wherever in the world they call home.
Maligayang pagbasa! Happy reading!
