Is this still a marriage? You may have only ever asked it in prayer.

Maybe you’ve asked it late at night, in a quiet house, next to someone who feels like a stranger. On paper you’re married. Inside, only a contract seems to be left.

Maybe you’re tired of being both people in your marriage. And underneath it all is a fear: if you name what’s happening, will you lose God too?

Before anything else: your safety

If you are afraid of your spouse, or you are being hurt, threatened, controlled or pressured into sex, please reach out today. You don’t have to decide anything about your marriage to make that call.

National Domestic Violence Hotline (US): call 1-800-799-7233, text START to 88788, or visit thehotline.org. 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988). 911 in an emergency. Outside the US: findahelpline.com. Abuse is not God’s design for marriage, and no one is required to stay in danger.

Carrying it alone wears a person down

Some people stay stuck for years, afraid that even asking the question is a sin. Others decide in a panic, late at night, with no one beside them. Many have had verses thrown at them like stones, or been told to “stay and pray” when they were not safe.

Asking honestly is not rebellion. It is a kind of faithfulness. And there is a wiser way than either silence or panic: Scripture, counsel, time and fruit, with your safety first.

An honest, gentle walk through the hardest questions

Is It Still a Marriage? is a 12-chapter book for Christian husbands and wives whose marriage no longer feels like one. It shows what the Bible says about marriage as a covenant, sets out the main Christian views fairly, each in its own strongest words, and helps you think and pray clearly with good people beside you.

It is not a divorce guide. It is not a “stay no matter what” book. It puts your safety first, gives reconciliation a full and hopeful place where that is possible and safe, and walks with you toward God’s peace, either way.

Inside, you’ll discover

  • A private “Am I Safe?” check before Chapter I, with help lines for the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, South Africa and the EU
  • What abuse is and isn’t, the high-danger warning signs, and why couples counseling is not the first step when there is fear (Chapter II)
  • What to do if your church says “stay and pray,” and where else to turn if a leader minimizes your danger (Chapter II)
  • The four main Christian views on when a marriage may end, each with the verses it rests on, and the verses people throw at you, opened gently and in context (Chapter III)
  • What 1 Corinthians 7:15 actually says, what happens when the one who leaves is a believer, and whether a “roommate marriage” counts as desertion (Chapter IV)
  • Can a marriage survive adultery? Honest help with pornography and a double life, including when the unfaithful spouse is you (Chapter V)
  • Remorse or repentance? How to tell the difference, and an honest answer to “How long do I wait?” (Chapter VI)
  • The sexless marriage, from both sides, and the question “Is chronic withholding grounds for divorce?” (Chapter VII)
  • “Was it ever a marriage?” Deception before the wedding, and the Catholic declaration of nullity explained simply (Chapter VIII)
  • In sickness and in health: caregiving, illness that changes behavior, and the money and insurance trap (Chapter IX)
  • Discernment without panic: Scripture, counsel, time and fruit, how to test dreams and signs, and separation as a middle path (Chapter X)
  • The questions after: “May I marry again?”, “Did I let God down?”, and four roads to peace with one Shepherd (Chapters XI and XII)

A note from the author

This book was shaped by the questions you asked in the comments, from wives and husbands, married ten years and sixty. Many of you prayed the same four words: Lord, open my eyes.

I cannot see into your home, and I will not pretend to know God’s verdict on your marriage. What I can do is open the Scriptures with you, tell you honestly what wise Christians have believed, put your safety first, and point you to people who can walk with you in person.

You did not fail because you are asking. Take your time. Read slowly. Pray as you go.

Questions you might have

Will this book tell me to divorce, or to stay?

Neither. It shows you where the Bible is clear, where Christians disagree, and where the author is offering pastoral judgment, and it says which is which. Decisions are yours, made with God and with counsel. The one exception is safety: decisions about safety can be made today.

Will it respect my church’s view?

Yes. The permanence view, the adultery-only view, the adultery-and-desertion view and the wider views are each set out fairly, with their verses and the churches that hold them. None is mocked. The book often sends you back to your pastor.

Is it explicit?

No. Hard subjects such as adultery, pornography and the sexless marriage are handled plainly but reverently. There are no graphic descriptions.

Is it a physical book? Can I print it?

It’s a PDF you download instantly. You also get a printer-friendly edition for the worksheets and question cards.

Is it legal advice?

No. Laws on separation, divorce, property, pensions and children differ from country to country. Please speak to a lawyer or a legal aid service before you make legal decisions.

Can we read it as a couple?

Some parts, yes, if you are both safe and both willing. If you are afraid of your spouse, please read it privately and don’t leave it where it can be found.

What if I’m in danger right now?

Please don’t wait for a book. Call 911 in an emergency, or the National Domestic Violence Hotline (US) at 1-800-799-7233, text START to 88788, or visit thehotline.org. Call or text 988 if you are in crisis. Outside the US, findahelpline.com lists free, confidential lines. Advocates help you plan for safety, quietly and for free.
