There’s an unmistakable chill in the air here in London, UK. Autumn is coming, and that means it’s time for many of our feathered friends to make their seasonal migrations. We’re saying goodbye to swallows, nightingales and cuckoos, as they fly south, and we’re welcoming geese, swans and winter thrushes who join our shores from the colder north.

Look up into the sky and you may be lucky enough to spot migrating birds, flying in their beautiful V formations. This wonder of nature was the inspiration for my Flock of Birds Hat and Mitts set.

Featuring the understated elegance of twisted ribbing, this hat and matching mitts have a comfortable and super stretchy fabric. Cushy ribs, paired with fingering weight yarn, result in a light yet cosy fabric that’s perfect for transitional weather.

This pattern has been professionally tech edited by the team at The Knitter Magazine. Please note that pattern includes the cable motifs as charts only, with full explanations of cable abbreviations.

Sizes
Hat: Adult S (M, L, XL) (shown in M)
Mitts: Adult S (M, L) (shown in M)
The twisted rib means that these accessories are very stretchy. Each size will allow for a wide range of negative ease. For full sizing details, see table in pictures.

Yarn
Regia Premium Merino Yak, 4-ply; 1 (1, 1, 2) balls to make both hat and mitts; 1 ball (all sizes) to make either hat or mitts.

OR fingering weight yarn:
Hat: 35 (45, 50, 80) grams / 140 (180, 220, 320) metres / 150 (200, 240, 350) yards
Mitts: 30 (35, 40) grams / 120 (140, 160) metres / 130 (150, 180) yards
Choose a yarn that is tightly plied to give good stitch definition, and has some wool, for stretch. 100% merino, or any standard sock yarn will work well. Avoid variegated or very tonal yarns, which will detract from the intricate cables.
