COMMUNION – Discern the Body by Bro H
“Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.” [Verse 1] When Corinth gathered at the table, They came not for the better; They separated into factions And would not wait together. One filled himself while one went hungry; Another drank his fill. They shamed the poor, despised the church, And called it supper still. Paul answered, “This is not the meal Delivered by the Lord.” He gave them back the bread and cup And Christ’s commanding word. “Unworthily” described their manner, Not personal worth attained; Let every man examine himself, Then let him eat and drink. [Chorus] Discern the body of the Lord; Let every heart be tried. Remember all His body bore— Our sickness, grief, and pain. Come not divided, proud, or false; Let strife and pretense cease. Judge yourself, then eat and drink As one in faith and peace. [Verse 2] In Gethsemane, before the nails, He prayed more earnestly; His sweat became like drops of blood And fell upon the ground. He gave His back to those who struck, His face to shame and scorn; The chastisement that brought us peace Was in His body borne. The table is no empty form, No charm within the bread; We look in faith upon the Christ Who suffered in our stead. We do not order God to heal Or place Him at our will; We ask in faith, “If You are willing,” And trust Your answer still. [Verse 3] For we being many are one bread, One body in the Lord; No faction shames another member Whom Jesus came to restore. The greatest takes the servant’s place; The strong must wait and share. A brother cannot harbor hatred And rightly worship there. Confess, repent, and be restored; Let known offenses cease. The assembly must guard the table too When open sin is seen. Each man must judge his hidden heart; The church must act on what is known. Self-judgment and assembly order Submit to Christ alone. [Chorus] Discern the body of the Lord; Let every heart be tried. Remember all His body bore— Our sickness, grief, and pain. Come not divided, proud, or false; Let strife and pretense cease. Judge yourself, then eat and drink As one in faith and peace. [Verse 4 — solemn warning] A Judas heart may share the table, Speak softly, sing, and pray, While treachery waits beneath the surface Until its chosen day. A hidden reef may feast without fear; A false brother may deceive. But covenant knowledge and Israel’s name Cannot make rebellion clean. God sees what brethren cannot see And brings the truth to light. His blessing rests upon the faithful, Repentant, sincere, and contrite. But one who knowingly mocks the blood While hiding his deceit Must turn, abstain, or bear the judgment He calls upon himself. [Bridge] Bless those who come in faith, O Lord; Give strength and healing there. Unite the body in the truth; Expose what men conceal. For some were weak, and some were sick, And some had fallen asleep. The living God is not mocked; Bless faithful hearts; let deceivers fear. [Final Chorus] Discern the body of the Lord; Let every heart be tried. Remember He bore grief and pain; His stripes speak healing still. Come trusting that the Lord can heal, Yet bow before His will. Now eat the bread and drink the cup; Proclaim His death until He comes.
