The Farewelling of a Home is a world-first liturgy written by New Zealand poet and historian, Dr Jane Simpson. For centuries householders have asked clergy to bless their homes, but there has been no service, religious or non-religious, to farewell them. This new liturgy is distinctive for its use of lament, relating to a range of contexts, including moving into a retirement village. It may be led by the householder, an ordained minister or civil celebrant. Suggestions for symbols and actions are given at the end. Review comment from Anne-Marie Lumley:

‘Simpson is to be applauded for this initiative. The Farewelling of a Home is a liturgy that is useful and versatile, profound and beautiful, in a world that is increasingly in need of ritual to celebrate the most essential of human experiences.’ (Australian Journal of Liturgy, vol.17 no.4, 2021, p.253)
