Two books, and between them a whole year.
The Green Gables Kitchen Companion covers the year as it is usually lived. Spring greens and tea biscuits, summer preserves and cordials, autumn apples and putting by, winter suppers to carry a household through to March. Forty-seven recipes across four seasons.
Christmas at Green Gables covers the six weeks the Companion deliberately leaves alone. The cakes made in November, the peel candied over five slow days, the taffy pull, the doughnuts fried on Christmas morning, the jars tied with paper and carried down the road. Forty-one recipes across eight sections, from the first cake to the New Year.
Nothing in one repeats anything in the other. That was the plan from the start, and it is why the pair works.
WHAT EVERY RECIPE CARRIES
- A headnote, so you know what you are making and where it came from.
- Ingredients in standard cups and weights, with a stated yield.
- A method, numbered and complete, with nothing assumed.
- The historical context. How Island kitchens managed it, with a wood stove and no refrigeration, and why that made the dish what it is.
- A modern kitchen note. What to watch, what changed for a modern oven, and how long the finished thing keeps at room temperature, in the refrigerator and frozen.
That last part is the one most cookbooks leave out. All eighty-eight recipes answer it.
THE TEN PRINTABLE KITCHEN SHEETS
The sheets were built for the pair, not for either book on its own.
Six of them are house sheets that belong to no single book. The Ratio Almanac, nine proportions worth knowing and what goes wrong on either side of them. Tins and Temperatures. When You Have Run Out. What Went Wrong, symptom on the left and cause on the right. Putting Up Safely, the acidity line and the processing times. Jar labels and gift tags you can type into or print blank.
Two index Christmas at Green Gables: the Christmas Baking Countdown, and a keeping chart for all forty-one recipes.
Two index the Companion: the Preserving Year, and a keeping chart for all forty-seven.
Buy one book and two of the ten sheets point at a book you do not own. Buy both and the set is complete.

WHO IT IS FOR
Anyone who has read Anne of Green Gables and wondered what any of it tasted like. Anyone who cooks by the season rather than by the week. Anyone who has ever put an old recipe back on the shelf because it said bake until done and left it there.
If you want thirty minute weeknight dinners, this is not that. The plum pudding takes three hours, the candied peel takes five days, and the black fruitcake wants three weeks in a cupboard before you cut it. That is the point of them.
Bought separately the two come to $19.98.
