Kevin R. Knight's groundbreaking book, Creating Leadership “Ways of Being” in L2 Learners for International Business Careers and Social Good, explores the dynamic intersection of language education and leadership development. With a unique blend of theoretical insights and practical applications, Knight demonstrates how English language teachers can cultivate leadership qualities in their students, preparing them for impactful careers in international business. The book draws on a wide array of case studies and real-life examples, making it an invaluable resource for educators looking to inspire social responsibility and global awareness among their students.

Published by Candlin & Mynard ePublishing, this volume is part of the newly formed Leadership in Language Education Series, which aims to bridge the gap between language education and leadership training. Knight's extensive experience in both academic and professional settings shines through as he provides educators with actionable strategies and tools to foster leadership skills in their learners. By integrating concepts from English for Specific Purposes (ESP), content-based instruction, and project-based learning, Knight's book offers a comprehensive approach to developing the next generation of global leaders.

Review by Tim Murphey

Knight’s book might be a bridge over the troubled waters of leadership! Most of us fearfully step into the rivers of leadership, some of us have nearly drowned. Some of us sometimes have found a good boat and maps to navigate the rapids and the dams while some of us are swimming for our lives. Even after experiencing many of these stressful things, we still dare to occasionally step into the river of leadership again. But it is always a different river, albeit one with both possibilities to beware of and to enjoy, and if we step carefully and wisely, one that we can fill with our own capacities for better leading and better lives for others. As John Lewis said, “Ordinary people with extraordinary vision can redeem the soul of America by getting in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble” (Geathers, 2020). Freire (1970) also proposed long ago: “Banking education resists dialogue; problem-posing education regards dialogue as indispensable to the act of cognition which unveils reality” (p. 71). Knight’s book provides good maps, advice, stories, and charts and still wisely leaves it up to us to take our next step into dialogue, to fill leadership, “the empty referent” with our meanings and meaningfulness.
