This Cute Leprechaun and Friends St. Patrick's Day art lesson is a mixed media project that teaches drawing, painting, layering and composition. Students create a leprechaun character, shamrock friends, gold coins and a bright rainbow, then assemble everything onto a textured blue painted background.

It is a skill-building guided drawing lesson that reinforces the Elements of Art (line, shape, color, space, texture, value, form) along with contrast and creative decision-making. Students build the artwork in layers and learn how foreground, midground and background work together. It works well for Grades 2 to 6 and can be adapted beyond.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students paint a watered-down tempera wash background, draw a cartoon character step by step, add shading and highlights with pencil crayons, color the rainbow in order, and cut out their pieces with a white border for contrast before gluing everything into a balanced collage composition.

The finished pieces are bold and cheerful, and make a great hallway display. Use it for St. Patrick's Day and March art, spring classroom art, guided drawing units, homeschool art and sub-friendly seasonal lessons.
