Multiplying Fractions Guided Notes the EZway
Fractions represent parts of a whole or parts of a group. They help us describe amounts that are smaller than one whole. For example, when we say one-half, it means one part out of two equal parts. When we say three-fourths, it means three parts out of four equal parts.
\frac{3}{4}
We multiply fractions when we want to find:
- a part of a part,
- a fraction of a group,
- or a smaller portion of something.
Multiplying fractions means finding a part of a part. To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators straight across, then multiply the denominators straight across. After multiplying, simplify the fraction if possible.
A common mistake students make is adding the numerators and denominators instead of multiplying them. Another mistake is forgetting to simplify the final answer.
