Almost every backing maneuver is the same technique with a different setup. This book teaches that technique once, as five named phases — Position, Angle, Chase, Even out, Recover (P.A.C.E.R.) — and then gives you a card for each maneuver that tells you where to start, which phases it uses and where it goes wrong.

It is written as a companion to our series of animated maneuver videos: the steps in each card carry the same numbers as the labels in its video. Where our research found a video label that was incomplete, the card gives the correct version.

What's inside (181 pages, US Letter PDF)

  • The physics, in plain words. Why the trailer pivots on its tandems, why it goes the other way in reverse, what off-tracking is and how the tandem position changes all of it.
  • The P.A.C.E.R. method. Each phase with what to do, what to watch and when to move on, with top-down diagrams of one maneuver from setup to finish.
  • Mirror work. What each mirror shows in each phase, how to read drift, and what no mirror shows you.
  • 11 maneuver cards, all with the same parts in the same order: what it is, phases used, setup, numbered steps with what to watch in each mirror, why it works, common mistakes (symptom → cause → fix), driver tips labeled by source type, recovery with a look or a pull-up, an exercise with a self-check list, top-down diagrams and a one-page cheat sheet. Straight-line backing · Offset backing, left and right · 90-degree alley dock (sight side) · Blind-side backing · Parallel parking · Backing into a loading dock · Truck stop parking · Tight right turn · Turning around in a tight space · Sliding the tandems · Coupling and uncoupling.
  • Coupling and uncoupling with every check of the model manual's procedure inside the card's steps: chocks or spring brakes, height, air and electrical lines, the tug test, looking at the jaws around the kingpin, landing gear, and securing the vehicle before you go under the trailer.
  • The skills test chapter. How backing is scored — encroachments, pull-ups, looks — on both versions of the test (the classic one and the modernized one), with what changes between them and where to check your own state's manual.
  • A 4-week practice program with cone setups, a stage per week, and printable log sheets.
  • Troubleshooting by symptom. "The trailer is going the wrong way — now what?", sorted by phase, each with the likely cause, the fix and where to review.
  • Glossary, sources and a verification table. Every number with a unit and every rule a card depends on is listed with its sources and how sure we are, so you can check it yourself.

Diagrams. Top-down, at one scale through the whole book. Truck positions come from the series' vehicle simulator, so the trailer angles follow the physics instead of being drawn by eye.

Who it is for

  • CDL students getting ready for the backing part of the skills test.
  • Drivers in their first year who want a repeatable way to back into docks, truck stops and tight spaces.
  • Drivers who keep failing the same backing maneuver and want to know why.

What it is not

  • It is not a substitute for professional training, your state's CDL manual or your examiner. When this book and your state manual disagree, follow your state manual.
  • It is not endorsed by the FMCSA, AAMVA, any state or provincial licensing agency, any carrier or any driving school. Official manuals are quoted and cited so you can check them yourself.
  • It does not promise that you will pass a test. No book can.
  • It is not a written-test (knowledge test) study guide. It covers backing, a few everyday maneuvers, and coupling.

Frequently asked questions

Will this book help me pass my CDL skills test?

It teaches a repeatable technique for every backing exercise and explains how backing is scored, but no book can promise a pass. Your instructor, your practice time and your state's rules decide that.

Is this official CDL material?

No. It is independent and not endorsed by the FMCSA, AAMVA or any licensing agency. It quotes and cites the official manuals so you can check every rule yourself.

Does it cover my state?

It is built on the federal rules and the AAMVA model manual text that states base their CDL manuals on, and it compares several state manuals (California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Georgia and others) plus Ontario. Rules that belong to one state are labeled as such. Test details differ by state, so the book tells you where to check your own state's manual.

Which version of the skills test does it cover?

Both. Two versions of the skills test are in use: the classic one and a modernized one with four exercises. Which one you take depends on your state and test site. Chapter 15 explains both, and the book says which version each rule belongs to.

Is there a video for every maneuver?

The cards are written to match our series of animated maneuver videos, and each card's steps use the same numbers as its video. Parallel parking does not have a video yet. The QR codes in the book take you to the series page.

Can I print it?

Yes. It is a US Letter PDF. Every maneuver card ends with a one-page cheat sheet, and the practice program has log sheets made for printing.

What format is it?

A single PDF (181 pages) with clickable contents, bookmarks and internal links. It reads on a phone, tablet or computer, and prints on US Letter paper.
