Finding the Names — Installment 73 continues Roll 9 of the New Orleans inward slave manifests (National Archives Microfilm Publication M1895, Roll 9, NAID 173909088), images 121–240: 573 more entries (544 named, 29 unnamed) on

58 manifests, dated December 1841 to February 1842, transcribed name by name from the original records.

Inside: the brig Wm H. Tallman's 97 from Apalachicola, six of them X-marked by her own inspector as not corresponding "by name & Sex." Markus of the brig Chapman, who absconded at Charleston and was "detected and brought back on board." The brig Orleans's 65 numbered people — and three infants her examiner counted but her numbers never did. The schooner Maria's eleven, standing twice: once on her manifest table, once in a sworn affidavit for a clearance thought lost, the two papers disagreeing on nearly every age. The ship Tippecanoe's 34 from Baltimore, nearly all under full surnames. An Army shipment out of Tampa Bay in the Second Seminole War. And the brig Arabian's 61 people, arriving in eight separate owners' filings for one sailing.
