The document that authorises a project — what it is, who governs it, what the baselines are, and how it will be controlled.
The PID is the agreement between the project and the organisation paying for it. Approved, it becomes the reference point for every argument that follows about scope, dates and money.

- Project definition — objectives, scope, exclusions, deliverables, and what success looks like
- Business case summary — why the organisation is doing this, and the benefits expected
- Organisation and governance — the board, the roles, who decides what
- Management approaches — how risk, quality, change and communication will be handled
- Project baseline plan — schedule, cost and resource baselines as approved
- Controls, reporting and approval — tolerances, what gets reported, and the sign-off
