PURE AMBITION — Digital Edition

What does ambition look like when it lasts a lifetime?

PURE AMBITION is Jacob Van Der Land’s personal story of determination, risk, reinvention and the pursuit of a satisfying life across three countries and almost nine decades.

Beginning in the Netherlands, continuing through Canada and eventually Australia, Jacob looks back on the decisions, ventures, opportunities and setbacks that shaped his life. Along the way came business, travel, unusual experiences, changing beliefs, financial successes and failures, family, persistence and an unwillingness to simply accept the life that circumstances placed in front of him.

This is not a conventional success story in which everything goes according to plan. PURE AMBITION is about trying, failing, adapting and trying again — and about discovering that ambition is not merely the desire to accumulate money or status, but the determination to keep moving forward.

With candour, humour and the perspective that only a long life can provide, Jacob reflects on the choices that carried him from one country to another and from one stage of life to the next, while asking a larger question: what does it actually mean to have lived successfully?

Ultimately, PURE AMBITION is a memoir about the search for happiness, independence, purpose and the satisfaction of knowing that you continued to pursue life rather than simply watch it pass.

A life driven by ambition, determination and the search for happiness.
