Pickleball is a lifetime sport learners can pick up quickly: a small court, a slow ball and the two bounce rule make it work for almost everyone, and balloons and lowered nets cover the rest. This unit gives you seven lessons for a mixed ability class, each with a Level A, B and C option, so one group can play the same game at different levels.

What you get (17 pages plus an editable Word file)

• Teacher overview, level definitions and a 7 day unit calendar

• Standard and modified equipment, space set up, and safety and inclusion notes

• 7 lessons with Level A, B and C on every page: grip and ready position, forehand and backhand, the serve, dinking and the kitchen, volleys and the two bounce rule, scoring and modified games, and a round robin day

• A court and rules page with ball, bounce, net, scoring and court size at three levels

• A 5 station rotation, a skill check rubric and a class record sheet

• A 5 team round robin chart (every team plays every other team once) and a score sheet

• Student self rate cards

How I use it

I teach one lesson a day, run the station rotation as a review and finish with the round robin. Learners choose ball, net height and number of bounces as part of their level. Learners who use wheelchairs can use the two bounce allowance, which is an accommodation and not a level: they still choose their own level and supports.

How it fits with my other sets

None of my other PE units cover a paddle sport. The Volleyball Unit covers a net sport, but not paddles, the kitchen or the two bounce rule.

Who it is for: PE teachers, SENCOs and teaching assistants running adapted PE, and post 16 staff planning community activity. Written for KS3, KS4 and post 16 groups.
