My Safety Plan: Staying Safe Online

A child-friendly, practical resource to support online safety conversations with children.

Helping children understand how to recognise situations online that may make them feel uncomfortable, worried or unsafe is an important part of safeguarding.

This printable My Safety Plan – Staying Safe Online resource provides a structured, child-centred way to explore online safety, identify trusted adults and help children understand what they can do if something online worries them.

✨ What’s included?

The safety plan helps children explore:

  • What might happen online – recognising worrying messages, unwanted requests for photographs, unfamiliar people and upsetting content.
  • What can I do? – considering practical responses, including not replying, blocking or reporting someone, and telling a trusted adult.
  • People I can talk to – identifying trusted adults at home and school who can offer help and support.
  • Useful places to get help – introducing services such as Childline, Report Remove and CEOP.
  • Things to remember – reinforcing that children can ask for help, will be listened to and should not feel ashamed or blamed if something goes wrong online.
  • What helps me stay safe online? – providing space for children to reflect on their own safety needs and strategies.

Who is it for?

This resource may be useful for:

  • Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) and Deputy DSLs
  • Pastoral and inclusion teams
  • Primary school staff
  • Early help and family support professionals
  • Professionals working directly with children around safeguarding and online safety

How can it be used?

Use the plan as a starting point for a supported conversation with a child, helping them identify their worries, name trusted adults and think through appropriate ways to seek help.

It can be used within safeguarding and pastoral work, alongside online safety education, or as part of a wider discussion about a child’s individual safety needs.

Please note: This resource is a discussion aid and does not replace a school’s safeguarding procedures, an individual risk assessment or a tailored safety plan where specific concerns have been identified. It should be completed with appropriate adult support and adapted to the child’s age, understanding and circumstances.
