August Writing Practice Directed Drawing Back to School Paragraph Writing Draw
This August Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with paragraph writing practice for Grades 2 to 5. Students follow a simple directed drawing, create an August-themed illustration, and then write a paragraph inspired by their artwork.
Drawing first means students are not staring at a blank page. They have something visual and personal to describe, explain or imagine. The drawings mix August, summer and back to school themes: art supplies, clock, glue, school bus, book, backpack, flower, hat, dragonfly, corn, apple, fishing rod, tent, starfish, canoe, campfire, sunglasses, shoe, lemonade, bee, firefly, pencil, ice cream, globe and art easel. The directed drawings are created by Kathleen McGiveron (Ms Artastic).

HOW TO USE IT
Use the pages for morning work, writing centers, art centers, early finishers, sub plans, independent practice or homeschool writing. Print single pages as you need them, or turn the set into a full August booklet that students work through over time. The theme fits the end of summer, the start of the school year, or a gentle transition back into classroom routines.
Because the writing comes from their own artwork, students feel more ownership. They can describe what they drew, add details, describe a setting or imagine a character. This makes the pages especially useful for reluctant writers, visual learners and students who benefit from a drawing prompt before writing.
