LESSON 96: PHARAOH'S HARD HEART & THE FIRSTBORN WARNING
As Moses prepares his journey back to Egypt, God reveals the profound spiritual reality behind the upcoming
confrontation. God tells Moses that despite seeing miraculous signs, Pharaoh's heart will be hardened. Yet
God also declares a foundational truth of redemption: 'Israel is my firstborn son.' In ancient Near Eastern
culture, the firstborn inherited the position of highest honor, authority, and double inheritance. By identifying
Israel as His firstborn, God establishes covenant sonship. Pharaoh's refusal to release God's son carries a
severe judicial consequence—the eventual warning of Egypt's firstborn.
