This product contains the digital files (PDFs) for Lee Bradshaw’s arrangement of Sergej Prokofiev’s Flute Sonata, Op. 94, original for flute and piano, for flute and string quartet.

Here is an introduction by the composer.

This arrangement, originally commissioned for the Christchurch Festival of Chamber Music, was first performed in 2023 by Wendy Clarke and the Fidelio Quartet. Through Wendy’s generosity, the score soon found its way to the remarkable flautist Joshua Batty, who has since championed the work and commissioned the final iteration presented in this edition. One of Joshua’s earliest performances was with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, followed by several others, most notably with the Chroma Quartet, with whom he made the world première recording.

My sincere thanks go to Joshua for his commitment to the piece, and also to the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and the Chroma Quartet for their thoughtful input; many of their comments have been implemented in this edition.

A brief note for performers: this is, in many respects, a new work. It differs in several significant ways from the original flute and piano sonata, and necessarily so. A string quartet offers a palette of colours and timbres entirely distinct from the piano, and the piece now assumes an almost concerto-like dimension, albeit within the realm of a chamber music sound-stage.

As with my other arrangements (including those of Beethoven’s Fifth and Seventh Symphonies), I encourage performers to treat this version as a work in its own right rather than attempting to reproduce the affect of Prokofiev’s original. Embracing the ensemble’s new sonority — that of a true flute quintet — will, I believe, offer the most rewarding experience for both performers and audience.
