A long walk. Help and hope.

What can we do when something is difficult or disappointing?

After crossing the sea, Moses and the people travel into the wilderness. They search for water for three days, then reach Marah — only to find water they cannot drink. Moses calls out to God for help. The bitter water changes, and later the families reach the springs and palm trees of Elim.

In a separate present-day story, rain spoils Eli’s plan for a picnic in the park. Mum listens to his disappointment, and Maya helps the family think of a kind new plan.

Moses and the Water That Turned Sweet is Book 20 in Little Bible Explorers by Steve Lewis, an illustrated Bible retelling for children aged 3–8, designed for reading with a grown-up.

READING INFORMATION

The PDF preserves the square 8 × 8 inch layout and has selectable, searchable text. The EPUB requires a reader supporting EPUB 3 fixed-layout books. Its text does not reflow or resize independently of the pictures. Complete page wording is included in image descriptions, and the contents links to every page. Tablets, computers and colour e-readers are best suited to these illustrated editions.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Children aged 3–8 with parents, carers or teachers who have read the grown-up notes first. Share during family Bible reading, home learning or guided Sunday school. Younger children can explore the pictures, while older children can discuss the questions and read the Bible passage with an adult.

A NOTE FOR GROWN-UPS

Please read Exodus 15:22–27 and the book’s grown-up notes before sharing. This simplified retelling acknowledges the people’s real need for drinking water. It summarises the teaching at Marah and does not retell the full wording about testing, commands, disease and healing. The notes explain these choices and encourage reading verse 26 in context. It does not replace the full Bible account.

Do not shame children for reporting thirst, illness, distress or a need for help. Eli’s cancelled picnic is a small example of disappointment, not an equivalent experience to lacking water. A new plan does not have to erase the original feeling.

Sweet here means the water was no longer bitter and the people could drink it, not that it became a sugary treat. The water-changing event is particular to this Bible account; it is not a method of making drinking water safe. Children must never taste unfamiliar water or try to treat it with sticks. Grown-ups provide safe drinking water. The activities use paper and conversation only.

The book does not teach that illness proves disobedience or that faith guarantees freedom from illness. Prayer can accompany practical care and seeking appropriate help.

Bible focus: Exodus 15:22–27, read in its wider context. Eli, Maya and Mum are fictional present-day characters. Ancient clothes, landscapes and settings are artistic interpretations. Illustrations were created with AI assistance and reviewed for this edition.
