This is a customized cost and sales-planning service for an author who wants to order physical books, sell copies directly or compare direct sales with Amazon sales.
You will receive a written plan based on your book’s specifications, proposed quantities, pricing goals and intended sales channels.
DOES THE $150 INCLUDE PRINTED BOOKS?
No. The $150 covers the customized analysis, written plan and 30-minute review session.
Proof copies, author copies, bulk printing, shipping, taxes, packaging, postage and other third-party expenses are paid separately by the author.
DOES THE PLAN INCLUDE A PHYSICAL PROOF?
No. The author orders and pays for the proof through the selected printing platform.
The plan can explain the proof-ordering process and identify the costs that should be confirmed before placing a larger order.
DO I NEED FINAL BOOK FILES BEFORE PURCHASING THIS SERVICE?
You do not necessarily need to upload every final file, but you need reliable print specifications for an accurate plan.
These include:
• Final or estimated page count
• Trim size
• Paperback or hardcover selection
• Interior ink selection
• Paper selection
• Proposed quantities
• Shipping ZIP code
• Proposed retail price
If the book has not been formatted, calculations will be preliminary because formatting determines the final page count and spine width.
CAN YOU CALCULATE MY EXACT PRINTING COST BEFORE THE BOOK IS FORMATTED?
No. An exact printing price cannot be determined until the final page count, trim size, binding, interior ink, paper and other production selections are known.
If those details are not final, the plan will use clearly identified assumptions and provide a planning range.
WHY DOES THE FINAL PAGE COUNT MATTER?
The page count can affect:
• Printing cost
• Spine width
• Cover-template dimensions
• Shipping weight
• Minimum retail price
• Amazon royalty
• Direct-sales margin
Even a completed manuscript may change in length after professional formatting.
DOES A BLACK-AND-WHITE INTERIOR STILL INCLUDE A COLOR COVER?
Generally, yes. A black-ink paperback may still have a full-color exterior front cover, spine and back cover.
The exterior cover does not normally convert the book into a color-interior product. The final full-wrap cover file must still meet the selected printer’s production specifications.
WILL MY BOOK HAVE PRINTED SPINE TEXT?
That depends on the printer, binding and final page count. Very thin books may not support readable spine text.
The full-wrap cover cannot be finalized until the formatted page count and paper selection establish the correct spine width.
DOES AMAZON OFFER A BULK DISCOUNT ON AUTHOR COPIES?
Amazon KDP generally calculates author-copy orders using the per-copy printing cost multiplied by the number ordered. It does not currently promise an additional quantity discount for larger author-copy orders.
For a substantial order, the plan may recommend comparing KDP author copies with an appropriate short-run printer.
WHICH ORDER QUANTITIES WILL YOU CALCULATE?
The standard plan includes scenarios for:
• 25 copies
• 50 copies
• 100 copies
• 250 copies
An additional quantity may be included when it is especially relevant to the author’s stated goal.
DO YOU COMPARE DIFFERENT PRINTING COMPANIES?
The standard service focuses on one primary printing platform and may include one reasonable alternative when enough information is available.
Extensive vendor research, multiple commercial-printer quotes, negotiations or custom production sourcing require a separate quote.
DOES THE PLAN INCLUDE SHIPPING AND SALES TAX?
The written plan identifies shipping and taxes as separate expenses.
When an exact checkout quote is available, it may be included. Otherwise, the plan will show printing costs separately and explain that the printer determines final shipping and tax charges at checkout.
WHY DO YOU NEED MY SHIPPING ZIP CODE?
Printing, shipping time, shipping cost and tax can depend on the destination. The ZIP code helps create a more useful estimate without requiring your complete street address during the initial intake.
WILL YOU TELL ME HOW MUCH TO CHARGE FOR MY BOOK?
The plan will provide a recommended pricing range based on:
• Printing cost
• Amazon royalty structure
• Direct-sales expenses
• Comparable positioning
• Your desired margin
• Your intended customer and sales channel
The final retail price remains the author’s decision.
WILL YOU CALCULATE MY AMAZON ROYALTY?
Yes. The plan can estimate the royalty at selected list prices using the platform’s published calculation method and the book specifications available at that time.
Actual royalties remain subject to Amazon’s current terms, marketplace, printing costs, pricing rules, taxes and distribution selections.
WILL YOU CALCULATE MY PROFIT FROM WEBSITE SALES?
The plan will calculate a preliminary direct-sales margin and identify costs that must still be deducted, such as:
• Inbound book shipping
• Sales tax
• Packaging
• Customer postage
• Shopify or website fees
• Payment-processing fees
• Damaged or replacement shipments
• Complimentary and promotional copies
The resulting figure is a planning estimate, not a guarantee of accounting profit.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AMAZON SALE AND A DIRECT WEBSITE SALE?
When a customer purchases through Amazon, Amazon generally processes the order, prints the book, ships it and pays the applicable royalty.
When a customer purchases a physical book through the author’s website, the author generally collects the payment and becomes responsible for inventory, packaging, shipping, customer service, returns and related expenses unless a separate fulfillment provider is used.
CAN I SELL AMAZON AUTHOR COPIES THROUGH MY WEBSITE OR AT EVENTS?
Amazon permits authors to resell or give away eligible author copies.
The author is responsible for complying with applicable tax, business, ecommerce, shipping and consumer-protection requirements.
WILL AMAZON AUTOMATICALLY FULFILL ORDERS PLACED THROUGH MY WEBSITE?
KDP does not ordinarily function as automatic fulfillment for orders completed through an independent website.
The author may need to keep inventory and ship the books, use a separate fulfillment provider or direct customers to the Amazon product page.
DOES THIS SERVICE INCLUDE SHOPIFY SETUP?
No. Shopify product setup, website design, payment processing, tax configuration, shipping rules and fulfillment integration are separate services.
The plan can identify what a direct-sales workflow would require, but it does not build or configure the website.
WILL YOU ORDER THE BOOKS FOR ME?
No. The author controls the publishing or printing account, approves the specifications and pays the printer directly.
The review session may include an order walkthrough, but The Author Studio does not purchase inventory with the author’s funds or take possession of the books.
WILL YOU STORE OR SHIP MY INVENTORY?
No. Warehousing, inventory storage, packaging, order fulfillment, customer shipping, returns and replacements are not included.
CAN YOU HELP ME DECIDE HOW MANY COPIES TO ORDER?
Yes. The plan will recommend a reasonable initial quantity based on:
• Current audience
• Confirmed sales opportunities
• Events and direct-sales plans
• Available budget
• Storage capacity
• Reorder time
• Inventory risk
The recommendation is a planning judgment, not a sales forecast.
SHOULD I ORDER 500 COPIES TO GET STARTED?
Not necessarily. New authors often benefit from beginning with a smaller order, confirming the quality of the physical proof and measuring actual demand before investing in substantial inventory.
Your recommended quantity will depend on your audience, sales channels, scheduled events and available budget.
DO I NEED TO ORDER A PROOF BEFORE A BULK ORDER?
Yes, a physical proof is strongly recommended before approving a large order.
Screens do not always reveal trimming, color, paper, binding, margin or spine issues that become visible in the physical book.
DOES THIS SERVICE INCLUDE REVIEW OF THE PHYSICAL PROOF?
Not automatically. The Bulk Print and Direct-Sales Plan includes proof-ordering guidance.
Proof review may already be included in your Self-Publishing Preparation Package or can be purchased separately when the files were prepared elsewhere.
WHAT IF THE PROOF REVEALS A FORMATTING OR COVER PROBLEM?
Corrections covered by an existing Self-Publishing Preparation Package will be handled according to that package’s revision terms.
Editing, redesign, cover reconstruction, new content and corrections outside the agreed production scope require a separate quote.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY PRINTED BOOKS?
Production and shipping times are controlled by the selected printer and carrier. They may vary based on quantity, destination, season, file approval and selected shipping method.
The Author Studio cannot guarantee production or delivery dates.
HOW CURRENT ARE THE PRINTING ESTIMATES?
The plan uses platform information and pricing available when the analysis is prepared.
Printers may change their prices, specifications, shipping charges and policies. Final costs are established by the printer at checkout.
CAN YOU GUARANTEE THAT I WILL SELL THE BOOKS?
No. The service does not guarantee sales, revenue, profit, event attendance, website traffic, retail placement or inventory turnover.
Its purpose is to help you make a better-informed pricing and purchasing decision.
CAN YOU GUARANTEE A PARTICULAR PROFIT MARGIN?
No. Profit depends on actual printing and shipping charges, taxes, sales volume, returns, fees, advertising, fulfillment costs and the price customers are willing to pay.
All margin calculations are estimates based on the information supplied.

IS THE $150 FEE REFUNDABLE?
Because the service involves individualized research and analysis, payments are nonrefundable once review or preparation has begun.
If the author has not supplied enough information to complete the plan, the project timeline will pause until the required specifications are received.
