Notice what is happening. Reduce the load. Find support. Recover in your own way..

Regulation is not the same as being calm - and a regulated person does not have to look quiet, still or compliant...

The Emotional Regulation Guide helps families move beyond the pressure to stop difficult feelings and instead understand what regulation can look like in real life. It brings together practical, low-demand ways to notice rising overwhelm, reduce unnecessary demands, access supportive tools, reconnect and allow recovery - while recognising that different nervous systems may need very different things.

WHAT THIS GUIDE EXPLORES...

The collection follows a clear pathway:

NOTICE → REDUCE → SUPPORT → CONNECT → RECOVER → REFLECT.

It helps adults and young people explore regulation as a flexible process rather than a performance, with space for movement, sensory support, reduced language, connection, rest and reflection when - and only when - reflection becomes accessible.

Notice before the crisis point - Explore individual signs that capacity may be reducing, without expecting every person to recognise or communicate those signs in the same way.

Reduce the load - Consider what can be simplified, paused, changed or removed when demands, sensory input, expectations or communication are adding to overwhelm.

Build a personal regulation toolkit - Explore different forms of support and create personalised options rather than assuming one strategy, sensory tool or 'calming' activity will work for everyone.

Support connection and co-regulation - Consider how another person's presence, language, pace and expectations can support regulation - including times when space or less interaction is what feels safest.

Make room for recovery and later reflection - Recognise that understanding, naming and problem-solving may need to happen after the nervous system has had time to recover, rather than during overwhelm.

RESOURCES WITHIN THE COLLECTION..

Alongside the written guidance, the Emotional Regulation collection includes practical resources created to bring the learning into everyday life, including the central Regulation Pathway, a Pocket Regulation Pathway, a Regulation Habit Builder focused on practising access to supports, My Regulation Journey, personalised My Regulation Toolkit blank cards, alongside clear visuals showing the important relationship - and difference - between emotional literacy and emotional regulation. I have also added an additional guide at the end of this to help you understand, support and integrate Zones of regulation.

The guide also works alongside The Emotional Literacy Guide and other learning within the wider Wild Way In resources.

WHY IT CAN BE VALUABLE..

Many regulation resources focus on what a person should do once they are already overwhelmed. This guide widens the lens. It encourages families to consider environment, demands, sensory experience, communication, connection, recovery and the supports that can be practised when capacity is available. The aim is not to create a perfectly calm household. It is to build understanding and a growing menu of options that can be revisited as needs, circumstances and developmental stages change.
