About:
Uan is the word for lamb in Gaelic, and when I created these little boot cuffs, I knew they needed an equally dainty name.
I have always had a soft spot for sheep. They are cute, sweet and they make wool! As William Morris said, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” This is something I strive for in my life.
These boot cuffs check both boxes: useful and beautiful. They are perfect for gift knitting or for a quick little project for the wee ones in your life. This pattern is written in five sizes—to fit from a newborn to a preteen. It’s easy enough for a confident beginner but engaging enough for a more advanced knitter. Needles:
US 1 (2.25 mm) and US 2 (2.75 mm), 40” (100 cm) circular needle or needles needed to get gauge
Note: I used magic loop, but you can use whatever works for you.
Suggested Yarn: Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport, 1 skein in each of 2 colors 100% wool; 184 yards (168 m)/50 grams or any sport weight yarn of your choosing
Sample pair knit in 1-2 year size uses color Toffee (MC)/Natural (CC) approx. 40 yards (37 m) of MC and 30 yards (27 m) of CC.
Gauge: 30.5 stitches/39 rounds = 4” (10 cm) square in colorwork on larger needles.
Other Notions: Darning needle, stitch markers.
Special Techniques:
Knit & purl, colorwork, cast on & bind off.
Sizes/Circumference: 0-9 months ( 1-2 years, 2-5 years) (6-8 years, 9-12 years): 5.25 (6.5, 8) (9.25, 10.5)”; 14.5 (18, 21.5) (25.5, 29) cm
Note: Children come in all sizes, so these sizes are approximate. Measure child’s calf to be sure you are making the appropriate size.
