This July Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with paragraph writing practice for grade 2 to 5 students. On each page, students follow a simple directed drawing, create a summer-themed illustration, and then write a paragraph inspired by their artwork.

Drawing first gives students something to describe, explain or build a story around, so they are not starting from a blank page. The drawings follow July and summer themes: flamingo, banana, pelican, pineapple, fish, clam, starfish, shark, iced tea, sand castle, tree, sun, tent, fishing rod, corn, canoe, hot dog, whale, dolphin, campfire, marshmallow, hamburger, fries, hiking boot and blueberry.

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for morning work, writing centers, early finishers, sub plans, summer school or homeschool summer learning. Print single pages as you need them, or turn the set into a July write and draw booklet that students work through over time.

Because the writing comes from their own artwork, students feel more ownership. They can describe a setting, imagine a character or add details to what they drew. It suits reluctant writers and visual learners especially well.

FAQ

Who is this for?

Classroom teachers, homeschool educators, substitute teachers and art teachers working with grade 2 to 5 students.

What kind of writing does it support?

Paragraph writing. Students complete a directed drawing and then write a paragraph inspired by their artwork.

How long does each page take?

It depends on the student, your writing expectations and how much detail they add. One page may fit in one class or writing block, while more detailed drawings and polished paragraphs may take longer.

Is it editable?

No. It is a non-editable PDF.

Do students need to be strong artists?

No. The drawing steps are there so every student can succeed, and they can add their own details once they finish.
