Most Oregon Trail lessons ask learners to read about the journey. This one asks them to run it.

For eight weeks, your learner becomes part of a family traveling west. They’ll decide what the wagon can carry, buy supplies within a budget, track every change in a family ledger, draw event cards, and move across six connected trail boards.

The simulation gives each lesson a purpose. A broken wheel changes the plan. Lost food changes the ledger. Rivers, weather, geography, and limited supplies shape every decision.

But the learning goes far beyond the game.

Learners examine why families traveled west, whose stories were recorded, and how the trail affected the Native nations whose homelands it crossed. They’ll also learn about Oregon’s exclusion laws and consider who was allowed to belong in the new communities settlers created.

Along the way, they’ll make, test, cook, build, and solve. Activities include taping out a full-size wagon bed, managing trail supplies, making trail soda, testing muddy water, cooking johnnycakes, tying a square knot, weaving, building camp, and keeping a personal trail journal.
