Danish Volunteer Free Corps
Many Danes served in the 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking", one of the most famous Waffen-SS formations, composed of volunteers from various Germanic countries. While "Wiking" itself was a German-led division, it included a significant number of foreign volunteers, including Danes, Norwegians, Swedes, Dutch, and Flemish. Danish volunteers were often recruited into the SS-Panzergrenadier Regiment "Nordland", which later became part of the 11th SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division "Nordland". In "Wiking," Danes wore standard SS runes on the right collar tab and a unit-specific cuff title that read "Wiking". Their left collar tab was typically blank or bore rank insignia. Many Danish volunteers viewed their service as a fight against Bolshevism rather than allegiance to Nazi Germany, though the division ultimately served the Third Reich and was involved in numerous battles on the Eastern Front.
